EXPERIMENT 2: LOST/FOUND

Our second investigation, LOST/FOUND, will take the form of a three (3)-part experiment to pursue the question:

What is lost and what is found?

I. HISTORICAL PRECEDENT: The history of the scavenger/treasure hunt, in which objects are purposely ‘lost’ in order to be ‘found’. This section of the experiment will culminate in an actual hunt, sponsored by Rare Knowledge and open to all who would like to participate.

II. THE LOST & FOUND: Rare Knowledge will survey ten (10) Bay Area Lost & Founds in an attempt to understand what qualifies as a lost item, how lost items are organized and what happens to them if they have been unclaimed for too long. Survey locations will range from the very large (SFO) to the very small-scale (elementary schools).

III. LINGUISTIC and PHILOSOPHICAL RUMINATIONS: Informed by the processes and findings from Parts I and II, in Part III Rare Knowledge will attempt to gather and comprehend our various societal understandings of ‘lost’ and ‘found’ as separate states of being, while also acknowledging that the two are not mutually exclusive.
