In September 2010, I began watching a sci-fi movie with my roommates every Sunday, hoping to pinpoint the specific visions of the future I have carried with me since childhood. What began as an exercise has turned into an obsession of sorts, but thankfully an enjoyable one.
For the past eight years, I’ve kept up the habit. In theaters and at home, I watch it all. Pretty much indiscriminately. The results are short, snarky, often spoiler-full recaps of science fiction films (and every now and then a TV show), otherwise known as Sci-Fi Sundays.
And in the midst of these vastly different narratives, one hopeful thought strikes me: maybe our future isn’t quite decided yet. Utopia, apocalypse or something in between, I like to think it’s up to us which version of ourselves and our futures put forward in these films we choose to pursue.
